Melissa McCarthy hasn’t failed at the box office in 5 years, so why do critics think she’s doomed?
The Boss made $23.5 million at the box office this weekend, dethroning Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The movie only cost $29 million, so it will easily make back its budget. So why did her critics spin it as a failure? One tweet points to the sad, but clear answer in how Hollywood sees her.
Adam Sandler has made flop after terrible flop and everyone holds on to the idea that he’ll make another Punch Drunk Love or Happy Gilmore and throws money at him but oh no Melissa McCarthy makes some movies and she’s terrible.
Misogyny + fatphobia. How dare the breakout star of “Bridesmaids” be the fat comedienne?
I also love the movies she makes. She’s a thief, she’s a cop, she goes on a road trip, she’s a SPY, she’s the boss. She literally makes movies that are typical bro-fare. But she’s the main character in every story. I think it makes critics uncomfortable that she’ll tell the buddy cop story but it’s her and Sandra Bullock instead of two men solving crimes and learning valuable life lessons.
She is my favorite.
