united-nations:

A refugee is someone forced to flee their home country to escape persecution, war or violence.

Resettlement is the careful selection by governments of vulnerable refugees who can’t return to their home country. The vetting and screening process can take up to two years.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, refers only the most vulnerable cases to host countries for resettlement. Vulnerable categories of refugees include:

- Women and girls at risk
- Children at risk
- Separated families trying to reunite
- Survivors of torture
- People with medial needs.
