These are the books I’ve read this year. Jasper Fforde’s Tuesday Next, Ben Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant and Bryan Talbot’s Inspector LeBrock are all British police-types in fantastic worlds. Flavia de Luce isn’t exactly in a fantastic world, but she is a Brit who solves crime. Lemony Snicket is not British, but he does belong to a secret society that aims to improve the world. I think there is a clear subgenre here that I am really getting into.
Uprooted, Heartless, Darkest Part of the Forest, Sin Eater’s Daughter, its sequel The Sleeping Prince and Lost in a Book are all fairy tale retellings and feature female protagonists. Most had slow or repetitive parts and though I did not love any of them, I liked them all.
